Fuselages made of composite are like plastic - I'm the Plastic Pilot who flies the plastic planes
This is my blog, and it's about modern general aviation, glass-cockpits, FADECs, but also aviation in general

Improved layout

I somehow compacted this blog’s layout a bit, in an attempt to streamline it, make it more readable, easier to navigate, and give even more room to content. I hope you’ll enjoy it - feel free to contact me to give me any feed-back, even if you found a bug, or simply hate it ;-)

Going there (Reasons to fly - II)

This post is the second in the series about good reasons to fly general aviation, be it very light, or business aircrafts. It is about quite an obvious topic, but general aviation is an exceptional time saver when going anywhere.

The number of regional and small airports, non being connected by any airline, is just huge. Some are really well equipped, with instrument approaches, VIP lounges, and so on, and other are modest, with visual approaches only, but they make flying there possible, even with light jets, or large turbprops.

To make a pleasant example, let’s talk about the french city of Deauville, on the English channel coast. This is where the american film festival is organised, and Deauville is also well know for horse races. If you want to get there using an airline service, the closest airport is probably Beauvais, or London… so you will have to organise a land transport by train or car, which will be quite long.

But there’s also an airport there, with a 2250 meter long runway, making operation possible with planes up to Boeing 737. So if you rent you own plane, probably smaller than a 737, you can fly there, without any ground transportation needed.

This is really a time saver, and this is why large and medium size companies use these services. Even if they dont all use luxury planes, they can have their top executive at the right place quickly. This also applies to private vacation. I recently took a friend to his holliday spot, which was a one hour flight with a single engine plane. The alternative for him was a six hours car ride !

So if you have pilots amongst your friends, think of it for your next trip. There will probably no warranties, but your could save some of your time as well…

Deauville is a good example the other way around :
    - airport personnel is not very welcome
    - when you are at the airport, you are in the middle of nothing. No taxi, no bus, nothing. So, if you don’t have someone to pick you up, it’s quite difficult to go to the town
    - there is real help for the pilot to get the weather, fill a FPL, etc…

That’s very common in Europe: the airport may have all the facilities for the pilots (long runway, IFR approach, …), there is usually no transport available to go to the town. That’s really boring…

Thank you Fred for taking my feet back on the ground. I was may be a bit optimistic when I wrote it, and you’re right, there are some drawbacks in using regional small- to mid-size airports.

Many of them are in the middle of nowhere, and when I said that no ground transportation would be needed I meant no LONG ground transportation. And you will have to organize that, because you can’t just assume that as there is an airport there will be a taxi station, or a bus.

In fact you can’t even assume that there would be a restaurant, or someone to help you calling a taxi… so you’d better to find a local taxi company number before your flight.
