Flying over Belgium at Night

Guessing which country one is overflying is never easy, particularly over regions with no major geographical features. The same guess at night is just impossible… except over Belgium ! For historical reasons, all Belgian roads are equipped with public lighting. From small alleys to major motorways everything in looks bright from above.

I recently enjoyed a day trip in Brussels and both flights were at night. The captain was kind enough to anounce when we crossed the boundary between France and Belgium. I always fly book window seats, thank to that I could actually see the boundary…

The departure from Brussels was also at night and was even more impressive. The route we flew started with a relatively low left turn. I had a perfect view from Brussels airport, the city, and the suburbs while climbing.

Sadly I had no camera with me, and turning on my mobile phone was probably not the best thing to do. So I looked over the internet, and the best picture I found is this one. Airline pilots certainly work in the office with the best view on the planet.

This photo comes from the excellent photo blog of “Flying Dutchman”.
