Ryanair Boeing 737 skids off runway when landing in Limoges

by Vincent on March 21, 2008

A Ryanair Boeing 737 operating from Charleroi (Belgium) to Limoges (France) as FR1216 failed to stop on runway, and came to rest in the grass after runway end. None of the 175 passengers and 6 crew members got injured. A pregnant women has been taken to hospital, as a precautionary measure. Passengers have been evacuated using the slides.

I know I’m always saying the same things, but the facts I reported above are all what is known yet. It’s way too early to know anything about the cause. As always, there are probably many causal factors: technical problems, human error, weather, and many more.

Rumors already started to spread, but remember that it’s always the case with such incidents. The australian guy pretending to be a passenger on the 777 in Heathrow demonstrated that they are not reliable. Let’s wait for the investigation report.

An initial press release from Ryanair is available here.

suddenly change of direction of the wind, resulting in a tailwind and to long flare? short runway and just bad luck with the water on the runway which might have decreased the braking power? tire deflation on tuch down? i dont think we can blame any maintenance becuse ryanair puts safety before flight and have always god maintenance. maybe the pilot should have blowned of the landing and done a go around and tried again? what for the report on this one. is a tricky one, just dont blame poor maintenace on this one.

Mitch, as I wrote, it’s way too early to know about the causes. I don’t blame maintenance nor anyone else…
