A week-end less ordinary

by Vincent on September 28, 2008

This is just a quick post to let you know why I was away this week-end, and to tease a bit about what will come soon. I’ve been very kindly invited by Matthew to a fly-in organized by the flying organization he’s a member of. This group is flying Cirrus planes only. I was lucky enough to test fly the SR22, with the Avidyne glass-cockpit. Was that worth the fly through Frankfurt and Heatrow ? Certainly yes ! The destination was not far away from London: Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight. Why there ? Because this is where Britten-Norman is doing the final assembly of all Cirrus aircraft for Europe. We had the opportunity to visit their workshop, before a delicious barbecue. The visit included a Cirrus Perspective on display. You know, the one with the G1000.

The return flight from Heathrow to Frankfurt was also very interesting, particularly it terms of traffic. We took-off behind a Singapore Airlines flight bound to Singapore. This was operated by an Airbus 380, and I could good pictures of it. So here is a short list of what you can expect soon:

  • Cirrus test-flight feed-back
  • Comparison between G1000 and Avidyne glass cockpits
  • New photo galleries showing the SR22 and the Avidyne
  • Photos of the trip home, including the Airbus 380, and many other surprises

Preparing all of that will take some time, but I hope that everything will be online by next Thurdsay. Because the next week-end will also be a less ordinary one…

The first series of photos, dedicated to the Cirrus SR22 and the Avidyne glass-cockpit, is online: http://www.plasticpilot.net/blog/newphoto-galleries/gallery-31-flying-cirrus-sr22-and-avidyne-glass-cockpit/

You’ll have to wait few more days for the texts…

Hi,
Great pictures!
I am looking forward to hearing your views on the comparison between the Avidyne and the G1000. Particularly since I’ll likely start flying the G1000 myself in November.

I saw it was pretty foggy in some of the pictures. Did you have a chance to get some actual IFR time in the Cirrus and the Avidyne while there? And besides the Avidyne, how was flying the Cirrus SR22 in general?

I am looking forward to reading your upcoming posts on this experience! :)

Thank you Axel. The posts about the Cirrus and the Avidyna are on the way, but it takes time to write them. Both legs were VFR, but I played the “head down” game a bit, while my pilot was looking out…

To make the long story short, I just want one.

It was that good, eh? ;) Looking forward to hearing the rest when you have it ready…

Axel, the first post about it will go online tonight, in appoximately 10 minutes… so you’ll see how good it is.
