The North Sea Islands: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Wangerooge and Sylt
I have a new aviation project. It is in the same category of the 12 airports projects and both are now on my “to do list” for later. While exploring the German geography with Google Earth I discovered the existence of an island family in the North Sea. This archipelago ranges from the Netherlands to Denmark. Seven of these islands have airfields.

My personal relation to islands makes these really appealing to me. I did not defined the very nature of the challenge. Landing on all the seven in one day seems possible. The total distance would be about 130 nautical miles, half of it being from Wangerooge to Slyt. The islands area is 230 nautical miles north of Frankfurt, so flying up there, fly all the islands, and fly back all in one day seems tight. It represents a total of 720 nautical miles, or 6 hours at 120 knots. Add time for the landings taxiing, paying the fees and it makes it very challenging.
It is probably possible to rent a plane on one of the islands, or somewhere in Northern Germany. This new plan will be the opportunity to discover a new environment, including specific weather. Coast and islands meteorology presents specific problems, the most known of them being sea-breeze and sea-haze…
It’s a bit early to define an exact plan, but I already discussed the idea of flying there with german pilots I know. Talking about flying is probably the thing I prefer after flying. I already got some key information: some of these airfields do not have fuel. Another important thing that I’ll have to prepare before launching myself in this project is to find out… how to say these strange names: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Wangerooge and Sylt.

I guess you missed 2 of them : Ameland (EHAL) and Texel (EHTX). Why not go all way ?

Tartofraiz, you’re really observant. Ameland and Texel are technically in the Netherlands, but you’re right. If I go up there, two more are worth the extra flying.

Cool! Obviously I think this is fabulous and I can’t wait to hear about the results.
I’ve been very behind but I’m catching up now.
