Different perspectives: crossed expectations (part 5 of 5)
This post is the fifth of a series written by Jason, from www.m0a.com. He describes how what an instructor expects from a student. I wrote one about what I expect from an instructor for his blog.
Instructors need to be good with people, understand how someone learns, and have a will to be teaching.
However there are certain things instructors expect from their students. Maybe these are just pet-peeves of mine but I can assure you many other instructors will agree.
Tardiness: Most instructors get paid per hobbes or tach hour. Having students arrive late or canceling only adds kinks to their schedules and even effects the students after you.
Preparedness: We’re all guilty of this at one point or another. Maybe it’s forgetfulness, but a student is guaranteed to forget something one day. Most instructors are more than willing to help and provide you with equipment but don’t make this a habit.
Willingness: I’ve dealt with many students who have simply no desire to learn. They may love flying, but don’t care to put in the effort to learn anything about it. This goes hand in hand with dedication. It’s much easier for an instructor to teach a student who devotes time to studying at home and asks questions.
Use your instructor as a tool for he or she might be your greatest asset. Using this asset to the fullest will not only help you save money on on your certificates but help create a better pilot.
