Readers Poll – Hardest to spot VFR point or airport ?

Airports and VFR reporting points are not all born equal. Some really can’t be missed but others are not so obvious to spot. My “favorite” example is Bern (LSZB) point W. On the chart, it is where the motorway enters the large yellow patch representing the city. But in real world, the city is not all yellow. Ecuvillens (LSGE) is also a very surprising airport… it never appears to be where I expect it.

What other airports and VFR reporting points are hard to find ?

Are all VRPs and airports in your area easy to find ?

Are there some that you miss all the time, unless using GPS ?

I was going to say Ecuvillens as well. And I’ve always tought that Berne’s W point was a highway exchange… Anyone with a big bucket of yellow paint and good aiming skills?

  2. There’s a famous one in Sydney’s Bankstown airport called 2RN. It’s a fairly high radio mast, very difficult to spot in most meteorological conditions. To be fair, the reporting point is not the mast itself but “South of the 2RN radio mast”. The only time it’s easy is when fog covers the ground, the mast sticks above the layer of fog. Another way to find it is follow the M5 highway from the South, it’s right after an interchange.

And I completely agree with Jean-Michel’s comment about yellow zones on charts… quite useless for accurate visual navigation in most cases.
