Readers Poll – How do you like your instructors ?

by Vincent on July 2, 2009

Finding a good match between student pilot and instructor is crucial for good flight training. If flew with 13 different instructors now, one more than when I posted about my “Flight Instructor Breeds Guide“. The post does not need an upgrade, number 13 was not of a new breed.

For this month’s poll I’d like to know how you like your flight instructors:

  • Full-time or part-time ?
  • Younger or older than you ?
  • With or without experience in larger aircraft (turboprop, jets, airliners)
  • Instructor only or examiner as well ?
  • Airline / military / business jet aviation guy ?
  • Male, female, same sex, opposite sex ?

If you’ve stories to share about instructors, they’re welcome as well in comments.

Full/Part – don’t care, so long as they’re available to suit my schedule(!)
Age – less concerned, but generally older I want to fly with experienced guys/gals please, people who can teach the tricks, not just the syllabus.
Experience – prefer GA/Grizzled ag pilot types who have great hands on flying over the button pushers/ by the numbers folks. Believe in flying a light single like a light single, not being ‘stabilised’ 3 miles out.
Gender unimportant.

Hi Vincent,
All my instructors so far would fit perfectly into the Airline wannabe category (according to your “Flight Instructor Breeds Guide“). One of my instructors also became a check pilot/examiner while he was my instructor. They have all been very devoted, professional and knowledgable and I honestly have nothing but good things to say about them. Whether I have just been lucky with my choice of instructors or this being the general rule with so-called “Airline wannabees” I don’t know. Maybe somebody else have some experiences to share that can help draw a more complete picture? :)
